Book Quiz: The 2018 children's book awards


 

This year's NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults winners will be announced on 8 August. Before that, we thought we'd test your knowledge of the shortlisted books. Each answer is the title of one of this year's finalists. Good luck!

Answers are at the bottom of the page, but if you need to revise or fill in gaps before you peek at them, our coverage of the 2018 awards began in this run-down of all the finalists.

CATEGORY: PICTURE BOOK AWARD

1. The illustrator of this book won the 2017 Storylines Gavin Bishop Award.

2. The author-illustrator team behind this book also had a finalist in this category last year.

CATEGORY: WRIGHT FAMILY FOUNDATION TE KURA POUNAMU AWARD FOR TE REO MĀORI

3. The author/illustrator of this book recently provided the cover art for Tayi Tibble’s debut poetry collection from Victoria University Press.

CATEGORY: COPYRIGHT LICENSING NZ AWARD FOR YOUNG ADULT FICTION

4. The author of this book was a finalist in this category last year, too, for Coming Home to Roost.

5. The doctor author of this book also has a different book shortlisted for this year’s Best First Book Award.

CATEGORY: ELSIE LOCKE AWARD FOR NON-FICTION

6. In 2017, the author of this book became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to natural history, filmmaking and broadcasting.

7. This book’s author/illustrator was the illustrator of a reptilian book by Joy Cowley, which was a Junior Fiction finalist last year.

CATEGORY: RUSSELL CLARK AWARD FOR ILLUSTRATION

8. The illustrator of this book (which is also a non-fiction category finalist) has also illustrated books by the same author about Sir Edmund Hillary and Burt Munro – and their book about Sir Peter Blake will be out later this year.

CATEGORY: WRIGHT FAMILY FOUNDATION ESTHER GLEN AWARD FOR JUNIOR FICTION

9. This book, by a much-loved and esteemed writer for New Zealand children and teens, is set during the Christchurch earthquakes.

10. This finalist also appears in the Best First Book category.
